A note posted on the Board reads thusly:
Hey all.
This is the Head speaking. As things have begun to get hectic here in Urbadelphia, I'm implementing a system that tracks the motivations and actions of those involved with the Otherworldly here in Urbadelphia. This is so that all members of the network know where we, as the Watchers, stand on all events that happen. This system, known as "Character Trait Alignment", is similar to those systems found in traditional RPGs to track where characters stand in relation to the moral compass.
Taking a hint from the best-known and possibly earliest example of this, Dungeons and Dragons, trait alignment will be based on four major poles, paired in opposing sets: Good versus Evil, and Chaos versus Law (or Order).
Note that these are general descriptions only, with each possible combination having a wide variety of personality types involved. Don't use these to stereotype, people.
A brief rundown of the descriptors:
Good - This ought to be self-explanatory. Someone who's dedicated to helping others above themself, all that jazz.
Evil - The opposite of good. Things like randomly summoning large hordes of minions in attempts to take over the city count. (Yes, Jack, we're onto you)
Lawful - Dedicated to the concept of order and law; these people dislike breaking promises, and seek to never break rules. Note that 'lawful' and 'good' are not always the same. The bad guys can scrupulously honor their deals and words right down to the letter and still be evil as hell. (Izaya, I'd be looking at you, if you didn't only follow the rules because it suited your whim)
Chaotic - These people are dedicated to doing... whatever the hell they want. They don't have reasons. They aren't consistent. They just act. These are the guys in anime who are all, "What? How did I know? Eh, my gut told me!" and all that. People who don't particularly care about rules. Sometimes, to them, the rules just get in the way. Or they make their own rules.
Neutral - Someone who stands between the two opposite poles. Who is neither lawful or chaotic, good or evil.
Those are the descriptors, but a few more terms could come up if you've been working on a change of ways. Things like:
"Tendencies" - someone who's one thing 90% of the time, pretty stable... except for those ten percent when they're not. For example, Izaya is a Chaotic Neutral bastard with tendencies toward law... when he makes those rules. Although, really... sometimes we wonder if he works on a totally different scale.
Leaning - someone who's on the way towards a shift in trait alignment.
Revolving Door - Really. Who the hell knows what these people are thinking?
Aaanyway. If you feel like your current alignment, or leanings, are unfair, you can take the chance to come talk to me about it and explain your reasoning, either in private email or in person.
Yes, Izaya, this means that if you somehow manage to creep back up to "good" you, too, can call me and gloat about how it was all part of your evil, self-serving master plan. Not like you weren't gonna anyway.
Also, anyone can point out actions to me as the result of shifts in alignment; for this, I'd prefer if the suggester talks to me in private; they also must have reasons to back up their claims. "I think Seifer is chaotic evil because he was a jackass yesterday, insulted my granny and kicked my dog" isn't a valid shift suggestion.
Alignments will go into our personnel and tracking files and will be updated when I have time.
