He didn't respond, merely shrugged - it was an argument he'd heard before, from an all-too-personal source.
After a few moments of silence, he asked, "What if you were to die tomorrow?" he asked Genesis. "What if you knew you were going to die, and when, and you had no more time left to find your Goddess? What would you do with the little life you had left?"

I pause. I'd never given that too much thought. I sigh. "If it was inevitable, I think I'd just find a quiet place. I would just read LOVELESS on my last day... Pondering my failure. I believe that is what I'd do.."

"Would it give you joy? To read LOVELESS, and hear those words in your final moments?"
It was an odd question - Joshua knew that, but he couldn't help but ask. To clarify his thinking, he continued.
"If I were to die tomorrow, I'd want to be happy in that moment."
If I could do it over...
"I wouldn't want to have anything to regret...."
Forever was a long, long time to 'live' with regret.

"Of course it would bring me joy... It's the only thing I know of that does, boy." The child was deep in thought, probably didn't hear it in the first place. He began speaking again before I'd responded, anyway...
"I'd only regret not knowing the gift of the Goddess. But if I knew I couldn't... There was no chance, at all, I could at least revel in the idea of what it could be, and the serenity it would have at last brought me."

He smiled.
"Perhaps, you're a little bit wiser than I thought you were," he said to himself, quietly. Shaking his head, he looked up.
"You know, I don't believe that I received your name," he said.

"My apologies." I reply calmly. I kind of liked this kid... Far more wise than most--well, all kids his age. "You can call me Genesis." I gracefully stick out my left arm and bow before him. "And may I have the courtesy of yours?"

I shake it once, gently, and smile at the boy. "It's a pleasure. Joshua." I break the handshake and nod. "I must say... I do admire your outlook, your way of thinking. It's... woken me up a bit, I suppose. Needless to say, I will continue to search for the Goddess... but, I suppose I can try to enjoy it, until that point."

He smiled again, this time, feeling a little bit happier. He had gotten into this by deciding to help people, after all - he'd done far too little of that, lately, and it was time he started trying a bit harder.
"I've had a long time to think about it," he admitted. "All too many people forget - death isn't always the end." He stood up from where he sat, his smile becoming his trademark, self-assured smirk.

I chuckle. This made me think of Sephiroth... He used to speak of the Promised Land. That was all I thought of. "Perhaps that is the truth... Well, if there is anything afterwards, Joshua, I think I'd like to see you one more time. Just to close this conversation for real..."

I smirk. There was something hidden in that sentence. He made that clear. As to what that means, well... I suppose that was the point in hiding it. I chuckle and say calmly, "Then I look forward to that day..."

I smile at the boy. A different smile. One I was not familiar with. He was such an intriguing character... I nod. "I suppose I should get going then. This Goddess will not come to me herself." I turn around, away from the boy. I raise my hand in a wave. "But I definitely won't forget to stop to enjoy it every now and then, however limited my time is..."
