The silence of the night is broken by a heart wrenching scream, its sound imprinting on my soul. It echos in my head even after it stops and my body is restless. But I cannot move, I cannot give away where we are. My friends and I are the only ones who have the power to save this desolate world, free it from itself.
But with our Book Keeper in such a state we could only stop and allow the twin spirits to form a plan, a recovery. We've been sitting here for a couple hours now, the desert is cold at night. The temperature dropping nearly to the negatives by midnight when the moon is high. And as much as I wished we could be in that abandoned building with then, be some form of comfort, maybe even be warmer ourselves, I know that we wouldn't be able to stop ourselves. At night we grow bold and what's worse we grow insane.
We would just as easily of killed the twin souls for their resonating light and warmth than we would comfort and hold one another. Its frightening, but true. In our times here we've been stripped of our humility and our humanity to the point where we have to hold onto it so tightly that our hands burn from the force. This place, this plane, contorts you and changes you. Sometimes for the better, but more often than not for the worse.
And its with this in mind that I had ordered the shivering creatures next to me to stay in the darkness. To ignore the cries of our most previous member for with out them our quest is pointless, for who could stand on the edge of reality and dreams for us? Who would right us when we are wrong, the screams we hear are what shatter our doubts. Its the voice of all reason.
Yet, as upsetting as it is to hear, I also feel no stirring in my heart telling to me do something. Its as if the noise itself is discouraging us and telling us away, to leave even. But we hold enough loyalty to our comrade to not do that. No matter how tempted we may become.
We do know, though, this night will be long...
---
"Ramon," I whisper towards our leader and my, for lack of better word, mate. My hand gently reaching out and caressing his back up to his shoulder. His hand grabs mine and I move a little bit forward as he presses his lips to it.
"You're freezing," He returns softly and puts an arm around me, not much warmer than I am, but with him being in his natural element of night that makes sense. I on the other hand am lacking the heat of the day and the burn upon sunburn feel as we travel steadily by foot. But none the less his warmth does help a little and I look back at the other three.
"They need a fire and food, Ramon," My tone is serious while my voice is low and controlled. For a moment the world falls silent and us mated hold our breath.
Then a reality shattering shriek is heard along with softer cries of "make it stop" and "hold on... almost over". My eyes meet my leaders ice ones and I can see the pain clearly in them. He may not show expressions on his facial features anymore, but he does express a lot through his eyes. And as pained as he is, I am calm, as always looking on the bright side while he worries himself too much.
Finally he can respond in a quiet, but chocked voice, "I think... I think they are to be done soon..." He jerks his head back a little. "Wake them... We'll be resting with the Book Keeper and the Twin Soul soon." With out hesitation I nod and crawl slowly, but deliberately over to the others. Gently I shake the only other female...
---
"Wake Sisilei," A warm voice whispers as my body is shaken to consciousness. Looking around I see Roman up on the hill a little ways away and the cousins are curled around one another next to me. "You wake Jake... I'll get Mark."
I don't need to nod as I reach over and gently pat Jacob's shoulder, his red-orange eyes snap over and he sits up, shaking himself free of extra sand. He looks to me with a slightly confused look and the he shutters as do I when one shriek reaches our ears. Then dead silence follows.
Marcus is already crawling up to meet with Roman and I glance to Danni, she nods to me. I gently direct Jake in the direction needed and he moves easily. I follow behind and Danni after me. Once we are all gathered we are told that we're moving to the building where Tes and Ion are.
I smile as we begin our journey, glad my sibling is doing better.
---
"I....Ion?" Testimony's voice is weak as I lay their head down, saddened by what they've lost this time around. Their identity, not that I remember what it was before we did this, but still. Was Tes male before? Or female? I cannot remember, no one will.
But that's not what truly and deeply bothers me, if we're not careful Tes will never be able to cross planes back. And that is not except able. Especially if these humans fail in their mission, the Book Keeper's line must live on no matter what. For if Testimony were to conceive here... Their children would not be as lucky as my family, they would become Shadows like everyone else. Damned in this hell we call home.
But none the less I have to smile down at the Book Keeper, "Yes, Tes?"
".... Is it.... Is it--" And that's when the others come slinking in and my Twinned Soul must stop in words. Their face once of tiredness is now a bright and happy thing. "My... Friends."
The head human, Roman I think, glares at me and I just smile to him, "Tes is fine now... Just tired.... I think we all need some rest." Some mumbles were heard and then I'm forced to back away and huddle in a space away from the group as they surround their Book Keeper and shut me out.
I understand.
Who would want to trust a Shadow who was just making your voice of reason twist around in their hands just a moment ago. Besides, its only I who needs to be near Tes to recover, Tes needs them to regain strength. And by morning they will be ready to travel and then the sun shall strengthen me as we go. So no worries.
None.
Not even as they fall asleep and leave me to watch them. The younger ones didn't mean to, but they do not know how to stay awake like us older ones do. That's not good though, for once you read a certain age here... You really need that skill.
I sigh to myself and shake my head.
My worry shall get me no where, but a headache. So I lean against the wall and huddle my legs in close to me. My ears listening and my eyes watching. Morning will be in a few hours.
They'll all wake before sun rise and we'll begin travel by day brake., "Only twenty five miles from the castle... And ten miles from home... Maybe we can--" I stop myself from saying that, thinking that. My family can't be burdened by a boy who has gone against the crown. That would be death for them and stupidity on my part. So I keep watch silently and refuse to think beyond what I need to be on the look out for.
And the night wares on....

And that's all I can remember from my dream... Hope you enjoyed~
