I stood in the back room at Veil, leaned against a table and checked the time on my phone, waiting for my guest to arrive.
She'd been here from the early days, I recalled, bringing up my memories of this particular individual. She'd done well, been a Contact for a while, and preferred being out in the field. She was dedicated, driven... everything I needed.
And I did need help. If I couldn't get any help out of the people I had in position, I'd get help elsewhere. I'd put it in front of the rest of the Network, and they'd agreed.
I just hoped she'd accept the position. At least I wasn't going to be doing to her what Mr. H did to me.
Speaking of which, wasn't her ability precognition, as well? Another point in her favor.
I smiled. Yes, she'd make an excellent Watcher.

Hiyono had to concentrate in order to slow her run to a walk as she entered Veil. As soon as she'd gotten the message from Neku she'd headed right over. In her excitement to meet with the young Head Watcher, she'd decided that sprinting would be a good idea. She didn't want to be tardy, after all. In hindsight, she had realized that this may not have been the best of ideas. She didn't want to be tardy, but she didn't want to show up a panting mess either.
Really, for someone with precognition, she definitely should have seen this coming. But there was no changing it now.
She walked up to the counter, sliding a few coins across the smooth surface as she took the water she'd ordered, and proceeded to down it.
There, she thought, placing the glass gently back onto the counter as she walked at a regular pace towards the back room. Now she could compose herself, appear professional.
Once her breathing had calmed she opened the door. Neku was here already, leaning against a table. She hoped she hadn't kept him long.
"Hello, Sir," she said as she entered, closing the door behind her. "You wanted to meet with me?"

I resisted an urge to sigh - really, was everyone calling me 'sir' these days? - and smiled instead. She looked like she'd been in a hurry, but she also looked like she'd tried to look like she hadn't been in a hurry.
"It's just Neku," I said. "Don't worry, it's nothing bad, I promise. Go ahead and sit down if you want to." I followed my own advice, producing a file folder from the table behind me.

Hiyono nodded, taking a seat across the table from him. She saw the file folder and was immediately intrigued, and she found that she had to purposefully restrain herself from attempting to use her ability. Normally it activated on its own, without her intending it to, but occasionally she could spur a vision on with the force of her own will. Only, those ones generally didn't turn out quite right. They'd often be too far ahead, or just not make any sense.
Besides, she would find out what was in the folder soon enough, she just needed to be patient.

She was struggling to contain her curiosity - I could tell that even without my disturbing new ability to read minds. I opened the folder, looking through what basically amounted to her personnel file.
"Hiyono," I said, "you've been in the Network for as long as it's been the Network, haven't you? About three and a half to four years, now? In that time, you've never left the field, done every mission you've ever been assigned with an exceptional record, served as a Contact and briefly as a Coordinator before deciding your skills were better used elsewhere, and done all of that with a dedication that makes me want to hurry to catch up." I smiled. "You've done a good job for only being here four years."

"Thank you very much," she replied, making no effort to conceal the growing smile on her face. It wouldn't have worked anyway, and would likely have made her look quite weird. Definitely not the impression she wanted to give at this point.

I smiled.
"I'll be honest, Hiyono; I can't run Urbadelphia by myself, and I'm killing myself trying. I need help. So I asked around, and it seems everyone's just as impressed with you as I am. We'd all be honored," and my smile became a grin - this was always the best part - as I paused for effect, "if you would accept a promotion to Watcher status."
