Howdy guys!
Now, what you're going to see below is part of something that I've been working on for a fair while, a FanFic based around the Mass Effect universe. But! In celebration of me completing Mass Effect: 3, I have decided to share with you, a small teaser from near the start of the fic. Those of you who haven't played any of the Mass Effect games may be somewhat confused about races, plot etc, but if you struggle at all, feel free to get in touch and I can tell you what you want to know!
The segment comes from Chapter 2, as of yet, the shortest chapter in the fic at only 3 1/2 pages in length, and contains a conversation between the Human Commander of the Templar Guard squad, Halcyon 'Hal' Unda, and Telrar Lok, the Krogan powerhouse of the squad. Anyways! Enjoy!
P.S: I apologize for this being one big chunk of text for now, when I go through to edit I'll separate it into smaller paragraphs :3
Lok was pacing around the room, growling lightly under his breath, picking up light objects such as metal bins or foldable chairs and throwing them at walls. He wasn’t stupid, he didn’t plan on tearing the ship inside out, he wasn’t going to condemn everybody on this ship and himself to death simply because of his own feelings. That wasn’t fair. When Halcyon stepped into the armoury, Lok instinctively grabbed a chair and threw it in his direction, the human leaned to the left and the chair crashed into the wall with a huge clatter. “Ngggh…” He growled under his breath as he glanced briefly at Halcyon before continuing to pace. “Sorry about that, commander. I’m in a bad way right now, I’m not in the zone that I should be…” Halcyon simply nodded as he continued to (cautiously) approach Lok.
“It’s alright Lok.” He said with a brief nod “Do you want to talk about it?” Lok simply chuckled morosely at Halcyon’s words.
“I’m a Krogan. It is our actions that speak for us, not our words!” He paused for a moment before looking down at his feet for a moment with a grumble. “But I do suppose it would help, to get everything out in the open, you know?” Halcyon once again nodded, motioning for Lok to continue “How much do you know about me and Sareen?” He asked glumly, leaning against the table which had most of Lok’s equipment laid across it. Halcyon crossed his arms and looked across at the Krogan.
“Not too much, there was obviously something going on between you two. But other than that, I know nothing.” Lok simply grunted in acknowledgement.
“I don’t know how much you know about Krogans or Asari, but both species have pretty damn similar life expectancy going into a millennia or so.” He stood up and moved towards a window, before looking out into the depths of space. “I’ve known Sareen for at least 200 years…” Halcyon unfolded his arms and walked up to stand next to Lok, before looking across at him.
“I’m sorry…” He said “It must be harder having known someone for that long, to have them betray you.” Lok growled at Halcyon and turned to snarl at him before slamming a fist into the reinforced window, it made a sickening thud and the window made a creaking sound, but did not break.
“She didn’t betray me Halcyon!” He growled before turning back to look out into space “She betrayed you and simply disappointed me in doing so…” He sighed “I could have gone with her, y’know? You, Kellt, Becky, Gordon… You couldn’t have stopped me. But I didn’t… I owe you that much Halcyon.” Halcyon simply nodded at the Krogan’s comment.
“And I thank you for that, Lok. But you were talking about knowing Sareen for at least 200 years?” Lok nodded before continuing
“My father was a mercenary, a member of the Blood Pack. I was one of those few children who was born despite the genophage, you know what that is, don’t you?” Halcyon raised an eyebrow.
“It’s a genetic condition forced upon the Krogan’s wasn’t it? To keep their population numbers down and stop them spreading.”
“Yeah. That’s right. Anyway, I was one of the few born despite it, one in one thousand… Heh, I guess you can say I’m lucky to be alive. Either way, I spent most of my time with my father on other planets, watching and learning what it means to be Krogan. I mean, I was only about one, but the way my father saw it, if I watched from a safe distance, it might sort of imprint on me. One time we found ourselves on this little backwater planet helping put down a push by the Blue Suns to expand further.” Halcyon cut in for a moment.
“Wait, aren’t the Blue Suns mercenaries like you? Shouldn’t you have been helping them?” Lok simply grunted and shook his head.
“Mercenaries help the highest bidder, not fellow mercenaries.” He said bluntly before continuing with his story. “Either way, you know how it is with the Blue Suns, they hire on anyone and everyone, well, halfway through the battle my father kicks down this door down to find an Asari wearing a Blue Suns uniform, she was injured, gravely and was cradling this little Asari baby, she can’t have been any older than me.”
“Sareen…” Halcyon interjected which earned him a small nod from Lok
“Sareen…” He grunted. “That was all that the Asari said to my father, she knew the battle was going downhill. She held up this little baby and simply said ‘Sareen’ from what I heard from my pop, he took this kid and simply nodded, said ‘Sareen’ back to this Asari and then headed back to camp…” Lok was staring out into space now, one arm rested against the window, lightly tapping the plates on the top of his head against it. “At first, he sort of bullied Sareen, treat her like some sort of second class citizen, I was her only friend, whenever she was upset I’d talk to her, comfort her… That sort of thing, you know?” Lok let out a heave sigh before continuing. “As years grew by, we grew closer, and closer. We joined together for the first time when we were still younglings, only about forty years old, I asked her what she saw in me, that there were plenty of you Humans on nearby colonies… She told me that she’d grown up around Krogans, as such she could only ever find Krogans attractive, only ever find me attractive…” Lok hit the window lightly with his fist as his voice started to crack.
“It makes sense now…” Halcyon interjected “We knew you were both lovers, and a joining with an Asari is a special part of their life…” Lok was growling again now, he moved away from the window.
“I shouldn’t have left her, Halcyon! Damn you, damn the Crucifix and damn the Templar Guard! I should have stayed! She’ll be lost without me, like I am without her.” He turned to Halcyon and grabbed the collar of his armour “Promise me that, Halcyon.” He growled “Promise me that you’ll find her…” Halcyon patted the Krogan on the shoulder “We’ll find her, Lok… I promise you…”
Lok released Halcyon and chuckled as the human turned his back to him and headed for the door “Anything else you want to ask me, Hal?” He questioned “Whilst I’m still in a good mood?” Halcyon paused at the door, he had been intending to ask Lok a question for a fair while.
“Actually…” He started “There was one thing that I wanted to ask you…” Lok simply grunted and leaned against the table like earlier.
“Go for it.” He said bluntly, earning a nod from Halcyon.
“Why do you hate your clan name so much..? Other Krogan’s I’ve met have all been crazily proud of their clan names, but you snap at anyone who even dare mention it.” Lok gave a hearty chuckle, a sound which made Halcyon smile given the current circumstances of the Krogan.
“I wondered how long it’d be until this question came up… I suppose I can tell you. Remember how I said my father wasn’t too fair on Sareen? Well, one day he caught wind of that fact that me and Sareen ha gotten closer than he had wanted. He kicked my door down with a shotgun in hand and demanded her to follow him outside, he fired one shot, aiming to scare me, but it ricochet off of the wall and caught Sareen on the side, I snapped, like you saw with the Captain earlier. I bulled him straight through the wall and beat him to death there and then…” Lok gave a deep chuckle. “After that, everyone knew that it was Telrar Gark that had been killed by his son, my father had a lot of friends, if I was to go about, proudly declaring my clan name could probably get me killed.” Halcyon nodded in agreement.
“Yeah, I suppose that’s fair enough… Stay safe, Lok. Give the glory.” Telrar Lok did not turn to face Halcyon as he left the room.
“Give the glory…”
