Sophie was the first to wake up the next morning. She had been dreaming about her and her brother being properly Awakened. The thought of both of them being Awakened was exhilarating, as much to her as her brother in the dream.
She had just finished being Awakened, and Josh was next.
Hekate reached out and placed the palm of her hand against Josh's forehead, just as she had done to Sophie. "Josh, son of Sara and Richard, of Clan Newman, of the race humani..." She began in English, but then drifted into a lyrically beautiful language that predated humanity. As she spoke, Sophie saw Josh's aura begin to glow, a bright golden light outlining his body...
Sophie woke up to the light, which, evidently had been the first rays of sunlight just barely beginning to peak through her window.
She walked into the living room, stretching. After finishing, she looked around, and noticed the teakettle that hadn't been put away last night. It reminded her of what had happened last night. The thought slightly saddened her. She took care of it, and then stepped outside their front door, onto the porch. Lying perfectly in the center of the concrete slab of porch, was another newspaper. She looked around at the other houses as she picked it up. Nobody else seemed to be up, or at the very least, hadn't gotten their papers yet (except for one, which was missing). Now that she thought about it, every newspaper, on every porch, for as far as she could see down each end of the road (except for that one), had a newspaper perfectly aligned in the center of it.
Okay... Talk about weird, she thought; and returned inside.
She sat down on the couch, opened up the newspaper, and started reading.
Today's news...
Obituaries...
The weather...
House and job advertisements...
Nothing seemed particularly interesting.
