"You got that worm on secure?" He reaches over me, his cheek close enough that my eye lashes brush them and he takes my hook in his fingers. I watch his beautiful, red speckled eyes examine my handy work. After a moment he pulls back and grabs his fishing rod. He pulls his hood down, his cat ears twitch up happy and free, "Good job Maya."
He smiles over to me and I reflect his, although I'm sure mine doesn't look as broken as his does. Shift about I follow after him as he walks closer to the water, his nails long and clicking against the metal rod. His steps are much more sure than mine as he sets down our lure and bait box, I set down our small picnic basket. He then shows me how to cast, only having to duck and dodge a couple times before I get my dead wormy out to the water.
"Watch the bobber," He adds as he casts out with grace. "When it goes down you've got a fish... Give the rod a bit of a tug when that happens, if the bobber goes down again reel in... Got that?"
Nodding he smiles and watches over the water.
This isn't the first time we've done something like this, simple and calm. Nor will it be the last if I have my way. No matter how much he tells me he's no good for me, I won't believe him, he can't possibly be the same man he's told me stories about. I can't believe him and I won't let him be even if he is. I'm strong enough for the both of us.
My eyes catch him gazing at me again and I smile to myself. He is always watching me, always trying to keep me safe, its sweet really. And he's always there when I need him, that's more than I can say for my boyfriend.
"...You've got a bite."
"Hmm?"
"Your bobber."
"Oh!" I yank my rod and stumble forward. "WHOA!" In an instant he's behind me, hands on my hips, holding me in place.
"Go on, reel in."
My hand is on the handle and I begin twisting it, my gaze drifts back as my head turns, his attention is on the water. But he's close enough that I can feel he is anxious, he really wants me to catch this fish. So I return my focus to the task at hand.
It takes about two minutes to drag this thing in and when I do I can hear him purring. We then both go to unhook the fish, he grabs out a bucket from the basket and fills it with water from the lake. The fish is large, maybe one foot long, and we put it in the bucket.
He smiles at me, "Fish fry tonight?"
"You cooking?"
"Duh."
"Then I'm there!"
We share a laugh before he catches my gaze, he frowns, "I'm sorry... You said you had a date tonight... Did something come up?"
Of course he would remember that NOW. I grimace and shake my head no, "I just don't want to go to another no show." I can see him frown deeper before I'm in his arms.
This is how we stay for a few more minutes before he presses a soft kiss to my forehead and we return to fishing. By the end of it I haven't caught another fish while he has three blue gills. But the important part is we're happy and he didn't press me...
"Maya?"
"Yeah?"
"I'm glad I know you."
"Same to you."
"Tomorrow... I'm heading home."
I stare at him before glaring, "You're going back to her?!"
He shakes his head, "No... I need to face my deepest demons... I need to face my father."
"Oh."
"..."
"Right."
"... Promise me something?"
"Hmm?"
"Dump his sorry ass... Find someone better, okay?"
Tears burn the corner of my eyes, but I can't cry, I nod, "Of course." Even though I already have, I found him after all. "... You too, alright?"
"Deal."
We sit in silence a moment before he ruffles my hair, "Hey, lets get these guys home before they spoil!"
I nod, "Lets!"

Oh goodness... How I adore Maya...
Anyways, hope you enjoyed this~<3
