Perfect. Her life was perfect. Spring morning with the sun shining, a setting that made her sigh with content. She stood by the open window, a gentle breeze coming through, the curtains swaying. Outside flowers had bloomed overnight, petals of white, pink, and purple covered the ground, nestled between strings of green. She placed her hands on the windowsill and leaned slightly out, taking a deep breath of air.
The scent of the outdoors made her smile. It had been a while since she’d felt this…peaceful? She thought over the word. Yes, that was it. Relaxed, unworried, peaceful. Soft pattering of feet made her turn around, still smiling. Small laughter filled her ears as she scooped up her child into her arms, “Hello, Shiki.”
The little girl giggled, “Hi, Mommy.” Her mother smiled her again, at the one who looked so much like her already. She spun in a circle while balancing her daughter on her hip, earning more laughter from the child.
“I want to go outside!” Shiki bounced in her mother’s arms.
“Soon, darling. I have to do some things first,” Her mother answered.
“Then we can go and play?” She nodded, “I promise.” Shiki, pleased with that, took a piece of her mother’s long red hair into her hands. She lifted it to her own locks, comparing it. The same shade blended together with hers, not one strand different.
“One day,” her mother said while looking at the hair Shiki had in her hands, “You might look just like me.”
Shiki raised her eyes to her mother’s face, those also matching her own brown ones, excited and awed, “I’ll be as pretty as you?”
Her mother laughed and touched her forehead to her daughter’s, “Even prettier.”
“You’re both beautiful.” A man stepped into the room and Shiki called, “Daddy!” Her mother let her down and the little girl ran straight to her father’s arms and was lifted off the ground again.
“You’re home early,” Her mother noticed and he answered, “I wanted to spend some time with my two favorite girls.”
“Will you take me outside? Please?” Shiki gave her father a begging, yet adorable, look.
“I’m sure I can do that.” He answered and when she shouted with joy both parents laughed. He let his daughter down and she ran for the door, eager. Her father stared after her his expression one of thought.
“What’s wrong?” His wife placed a hand on his shoulder, but he shook his head, “Nothing,” He wrapped an arm around her waist. “And you?”
She leaned against his shoulder, “Nothing at all. I couldn’t be better.”
“Good,” He heard Shiki call for him and he kissed the top of his wife’s head before heading after his daughter.
Alone, the woman took her spot at the window and watched her husband run around their yard, the little red head chasing him. She decided she’d watch like this for a while, then finish up her household tasks and join them. And they could all feel the peace together, as father, mother, and daughter.
As a family.
