The music boomed uncontrollably as I entered into the Veil and looked for Lea. When I couldn't spot him, I went and stood near the counter. The hangover I had from earlier today made the music seem so much louder then it was and ached me. Thinking of something to order, water was the only thing I really wanted. It would have to do.
As usual, the place was filled with people and the smell of booze. I searched the crowd one last time for Lea. When I couldn't spot him, I grabbed a nearby seat and waited.

He'd been waiting for a while, so he'd gone back behind the bar in order to pull out some new stock, thinking there wouldn't be any harm in that.
When he came out, he saw her sitting at the counter; oh well. Bad guess, happens to everyone.
"Hey there," he said, waving and winking at her. "You've finally decided to join us after all?" His voice was slightly teasing.

"Nah, I came here to get drunk all over again and wake up in someone else's apartment." I said as sarcastically as I could. I couldn't hold back my grin though. "How's work Lea?" I played with a coaster in front of me before placing it back down.

"Doing good," he said, polishing a glass. He set it on a shelf, then grinned, twirling a plate in his hands before also neatly placing it where it went. "A little boring, but you know... much less so with a pretty girl to keep me company." He winked and saluted, keeping his voice to its teasing tone. Let's see how she reacted to that; he'd build the rest of his strategy from there.
Yep. Same, familiar game. Nothing new, nothing changed.
....crap. No, no rhyming. No poetry. Poetry wasn't going to work for this chick. He could tell that. Not that he wasn't a decent poet.
.....even his thoughts were rambling today. He was really off his game!
I need to stop pulling all-nighters, he thought to himself.

I tried to keep a laugh down. "Keep this up and I'll have an ego as bad as yours." He seemed different tonight for some reason. Tired maybe? No, not that. The thought to ask him what's wrong crossed my mind a few times but I didn't bother with it.
"So, how's your day been?" I was never really one for small talk but I kept it up all the same. It's a social norm isn't it?

So flattery was almost working. He'd crack this puzzle wide open.
"What's wrong with an ego when it's all the truth?" He leaned against the bar. "My day... it's been the same-old, same-old. Listening to people complain about taxes, the weather, this and that. Here in Veil, you also get questions like whether or not Neku's doing a good job, who should get promoted, that kinda thing. Keeps a guy busy."
He shrugged. Honestly, it got a little boring here sometimes.
"So, can I getcha anything?"

"I got my water." I held the glass up and set it down gently. "For once I think I can handle a day or two without having a drink. My liver needs a day off anyways." I was joking but sadly there was an element of truth to it. Drinking has become a habit as of late, no need for it to become an addiction. I pulled out a stick of gum and put it in my mouth, then offered it up to Lea. "Want some?

He chuckled. "I was talking about a soda," he said teasingly, before noticing her offer of gum. "Sure, why not?" he said, accepting the stick and popping it into his mouth. He delivered a couple of sodas to some kids sitting elsewhere at the counter before wandering back over to Aya's seat.
"Gotta at least pretend I'm working," he explained jokingly.

I hid a smile behind me drinking my water. "I suppose." I thought of a something to say. Finally I came up with something. "So you wanted me to drop by for a reason? Or did you just want me here?"

He was walking over to another shelf when her question came; it caght him off-guard, and he tripped over a dustpan someone had left on the floor behind the counter.
Regaining his balance - not something he lost often, mind you - he glared at the offending implement, moved it, then turned bck to Aya, dusting off his hands.
"Uh. Want you here.... uh, not exactly. I had, um..."
.....God, why was this so hard? No, he would do it. He had to. It wasn't something to be embarrassed about.
He cleared his throat, dusted off his pants. "I was actually wondering if you'd go out for a meal with me when my shift ends." He leaned on the counter, gathering up what was left of his dignity.

This question caught me by surprise. Either way I tried to keep myself together. Personally, I've never been asked this sort of thing by anyone. Spent most of my life locked in my house and the rest of the time, people found me unpleasant. Either way I tried to stay focused and looking calm.
"A meal hmm?" I pretended to think for a few moments, although the thoughts that were present were What do I say? What do I say? Finally I got the thoughts to shut up for a minute. "Sure, what's the harm?"
This is going to come back and bite me in the ass, I'm sure of it.

SCORE! shouted the little tiny piece of his brain that had decided this wasn't just another date.
Shaddup, said the rest of his brain as it tried to figure out an appropriate reaction to her question.
"Absolutely none at all," he said, smiling as he leaned back further onto the bar, lookng sideways at her.

"Alright fine. After your shift you said?" It hadn't fully sunk in that we were talking about a date, but I was beginning to freak out a bit. How am I suppose to act? Is this a one time thing? No amount of movies seemed to have prepared me for this. Note to self; start watching cliche movies, might help you in the future if it doesn't raise your expectations. "How long will that be?"

He checked his watch. "About half an hour from now," he said, pushing himself off the counter theatrically... and, misjudging his own strength, as well as the fact that he'd just mopped behind the counter (the reason the dustpan should not have been on the floor), slipped and fell backwards into a (thankfully closed) cabinet.
"I swear," he said, getting back up to his feet and looking like nothing more than an offended cat, "this isn't normal for me."
God, I must look like an idiot, he berated himself.

"Just my stunning good looks setting you off balance?" I joked. When I wasn't speaking I was keeping my breathing calm and even. I'm not used to this, why would Lea want to go on a date with me? Gah...
"So should I wait around or should we meet somewhere?" I think my voice cracked a bit, did it crack a bit? I took a deep breath and closed my eyes, trying to keep from making myself out to be a fool.
